The Sheriff's Office is saddened to announce the death of retired Captain Robert Stratton who was tragically killed in a motor vehicle crash earlier today.

At about 1030 hours this morning, the 911 center received a call of a three vehicle accident occurring in the 700 block of Pruner Road. Deputies responded and found Riddle Bypass Road was blocked with debris from a three vehicle crash. The operator of one of the vehicles, Robert Stratton, was deceased.

Stratton had been operating a 2000 Ford F-350 pickup pulling a trailer traveling east bound on Riddle Bypass Road. Kathy Taylor was operating a 1997 Plymouth Neon 4-door west bound on Pruner Road and turned left onto Pruner Road, striking Stratton's vehicle on the driver side. Stratton's vehicle then slid into the path of an oncoming, fully loaded, log truck which struck Stratton's vehicle on the passenger side. The impact caused major damage to Stratton's vehicle and the 1972 General log truck which was being operated by Allan Stout. Stratton was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Taylor and Stout had minor injuries and refused treatment at the scene.

The case is still under investigation.

Robert Stratton worked for 29 years at the Sheriff's Office before retiring in 2001 at the rank of Captain. Sheriff John Hanlin said "Captain Robert Stratton was a dedicated law enforcement professional who served Douglas County with dedication and pride. Captain Stratton was a mentor and friend to many of us who still work here at the Sheriff's Office and he will be greatly missed."

Next of kin has been notified.
