Lost / Located: Cobin, Beth / age 48 / Unknown city of residence
On June 27, 2013, at about 1300 hours, the 911 center received a cell phone call from Beth Cobin who stated she was hiking the Tipsoo Peak trail near Diamond Lake and became lost.
Latitude and longitude data obtained from the call indicated Cobin was about 1/4 mile east of Hwy 138 East, at mile post 76 . The Sheriff's Office also requested that AT&T ping the telephone. Those pings also showed Cobin to in the same area.
Sheriff's deputies and Search and Rescue personnel responded to the area and began searching. DFPA provided a fixed wing aircraft and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office provided a helicopter to assist with the search. At about 1515 hours Cobin's vehicle was located on Cinnamon Butte Road near the Tipsoo Peak trail head.
Searchers continued searching all night but were unable to locate Cobin.
At about 0900 hours, Cobin was located after she walked out on Windigo Pass Road and down to Hwy 138 East, and contacted the command post. She was uninjured.
The investigation showed that the cellular data received from the 911 lat/long data and AT&T pings was 2 1/2 - 3 miles off from Cobin's actual location. The Sheriff's Office would like to remind people that cellular phones should never be relied upon as a survival tool. Many rural areas do not even have cellular coverage. Hikers should always be adequately prepared for unanticipated events.
