On September 16, 2012, at about 1315 hours, the 911 center was advised of a climbing accident that had occurred near the summit of Mt Thielsen.

58 year old Michael Hawley of Eugene was climbing near the summit of Mt Thielsen with a group of climbers when he fell. Hawley received serious injuries including a broken arm, broken leg and lacerations to his head.

Search and rescue teams from Douglas, Klamath and Jackson counties responded along with the Army National Guard, Brim Aviation, US Forest Service and ODOT. A helicopter from Brim Aviation was able to lower SAR personnel down to Hawley and get him ready for transport. He was then lifted out of the area by the Army National Guard.
