On July 29, 2012, at 1440 hours, the 911 center received a call of a boating accident on the North Umpqua River near Copeland Creek. This location is near mile post 52 on Highway 138 East.
A raft carrying seven people had capsized at the location. Nichole Pomeroy, a 16 year old from Bend, became trapped in debris under water and drowned. All other occupants of the raft made it to shore. All the rafters were wearing life jackets but apparently Pomeroy's came off when she went under water.
The Sheriff's Office Dive Team, Search and Rescue, Marine Patrol, Fire District #2 Swift Water Rescue Team, and Oregon State Police responded to the scene. Divers were unable to pull Pomeroy's body from the river. Weekly Construction responded and assisted divers but they were still unable to free Pomeroy from the debris.
Rescuers worked until about 2130 hours last night and are enroute back to the scene this morning. Weekly Construction will be assisting again today with some heavy equipment which will require shutting down at least one lane of Highway 138 East.
Next of kin has been notified.
