Incident Location: Umpqua River near Yellow Creek Boat Ramp, Elkton, Oregon
Case Number: 11-2311
Deceased: Rape, Derick Sean / 26 yoa / Yoncalla, OR
On Sunday, June 26, at about 1340 hours, the 911 center received a call reporting a male in the Umpqua River near the Yellow Creek boat ramp calling for help.
Sheriff's deputies, Search and Rescue units, Marine Patrol and dive team members responded to the scene along with fire personnel from Fire District 2, North Douglas Fire and Rescue and Kellogg Fire.
Investigators learned that Derick Rape had been swimming in the river with his family in shallow water. Rape decided to swim across the river. Rape got about half way across and decided he couldn't make it. He floated down the river calling for help and eventually floated out of site of the others who were present. Rape was not wearing a life jacket.
At about 1515 hours, rescue team members located the body of Rape about 150 yards downstream from where he had been swimming.
The Sheriff's Office wants to remind everyone that the river temperatures are still very cold despite the warm weather. Swimmers can tire much more quickly in cold water. Water levels are also still high for this time of year. This is the second drowning in a week. Both victims were attempting to swim across the river.
