On Saturday, May 29th, at about 2120 hours, deputies responded to a report of a female who had been hit by an ATV on the back side of Banshee Hill, on the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area in Winchester Bay.
When deputies arrived, CPR was in progress on 19 year old Ellie Powell. Powell had been watching an organized ATV jumping event when she suddenly (for an unknown reason) ran into the path of an airborne ATV operated by Jonathan Shonk. Shonk's ATV collided with Powell, causing severe injuries. Deputies assisted with CPR until EMT's with Lower Umpqua Ambulance arrived. Powell died at the scene. Shonk was not injured.
The case is still under investigation.
