On August 4, 2014, at about 1400 hours, the 911 center received a call from Pierce Thieme who stated he was hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, he was having a medical issue and was requesting assistance. Thieme had been dropped off on the trail on Sunday, August 3rd by his parents.

Sheriff's Office deputies, Search and Rescue personnel and an Oregon State Police game officer responded to the location and hiked about 7 miles into the wilderness area, reaching Thieme at about 2000 hours. Thieme was brought out on horseback and taken to the Diamond Lake Corrals where he was turned over to his parents. Thieme was going to seek medical assistance on his own.
